Dry flies on the Poudre!  Now we’re talking!  Whispers of Blue Wings in the lower canyon have been confirmed.  Mornings, evenings, and the occasional cloudy day will get those little nymphs reaching for the sky.  DO NOT hit the canyon without an assortment of emergers and duns.  Come in and chat with us if you want some pointers!

If nothing seems to be happening, dig out that size 16 chubby or PMX and do a size 16-18 BWO or stonefly dropper and start plugging away.  Double nymph rigs will continue to produce the most fish, but you will get the occasional surface eat if you put in a little time and cover water.

Give us a call at the South Shop and get yourself signed up for our free fly tying demo with Rick Takahashi this Saturday, March 25th at 10:30 a.m.  Ricks patterns have been time tested right here in our backyard, whether up in the Poudre canyon, the Delaney Buttes, or the Big Thompson.  He is an Umpqua Signature Fly Designer, with multiple flies being sold through the Umpqua catalogue, many of which can be found at either shop.  Rick also co-authored two excellent books which many of us are very familiar with, Modern Midges and Modern Terrestrials.  He is a great teacher and tier, and by far one of the nicest guys we have ever met.  As always, coffee and pastries are on us!

March 20th, 2017 8:00am

As of 4:28 a.m. this morning, it is officially spring.  We made it!  Weather on the front range has been unreal, but the mountains are still holding out on the seasons worth of water.  If Colorado has taught us anything it’s that spring is moody.  The fact remains that the weather is probably going to change at some point, so let’s just all help each other stay ready for when it does and enjoy our current weather pattern.

Not only does spring bring warmer weather and more sunshine, but more options as well.  The carp are starting to get hungry as their shallow water locales begin to heat up and their metabolisms start cranking up.  If you are truly looking for solitude this time of year, look towards the shallower areas of your favorite local lakes and ponds.  We have a good selection of carp bugs at both shops and plenty of carpaholics to dish out the goods on rigging, techniques, and places to find them.

Big things are happening up north.  Come on in or give us a call at either shop if you plan on hitting the North Platte and need a few suggestions.  Our guides are dialed in and we have the intel!  Here’s a healthy fish from a recent Mile float.

We want to thank all fly tiers that made the effort to come out and do demos for us, as well as everybody that came out and watched them tie!  With that being said, we have one more much anticipated FREE demo to go, and that would be the legendary Rick Takahashi next Saturday, March 25th.  Rick is well known for his phenomenal Chrinomid and smaller midge patterns, many of which are an absolute necessity on all of our technical tailwaters and stillwaters, from South to North Park, all the way into Wyoming and anywhere huge trout lurk.

Many of our favorite lakes have finally opened up and are about to turn on, or are starting to crack!  Now is the time to get some fresh ideas and fill that lake box up!  Give us a call at St. Pete’s South at (970) 377-3785 and get yourself signed up for our final demo of the season.

The flush is over on the Reef and flows are currently hovering around the 1000 cfs mark as water is being shuffled around in anticipation of the upcoming snowmelt.  Depending on who you talk to, the next couple of months are the best to be on the Reef and Mile and the time is now to knock the dust off and get your spring fix.  We have been hearing great reports from our guides Kevin and Rex who have been spending plenty of time getting dialed on the Reef and making all of us in the shop jealous.

Whether you’re self-guided or St. Pete’s-guided, if you happen to find yourself in the front of a drift boat in the upcoming weeks floating your way towards the Chalk Bluffs or Lusby access, chances are you’re about to heck of a good time.

On April 4th, the latest book from John Gierach called A Fly Rod of Your Own hits the shelves!  John’s writing has fueled the passion of fly fisherman for decades and to say we are excited to get our hands on his new book is an understatement.  John will be at St. Pete’s Old Town for a book signing on Saturday, April 8th from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. so don’t miss this great opportunity to get your copy signed!  We are currently taking pre-orders for the new book at the Old Town shop so come on in and make sure you get your copy!  The first shipment of books is in limited supply!

We are extremely excited to be hosting Charlie Craven once again at the South shop for our two part tying demo event with Umpqua Feather Merchants.  Unfortunately the actual demo is full, but if you did get signed up for Charlie's demo, we'll see you at 10:30.  If not, Craven will be at the shop until 2:30 for a book signing.  We will have a good ol' fashioned cookout with food and beverages here at the shop, while checking out Umpqua's fly wall!   Umpqua is also offering special pricing on Saturday for any order of a dozen of any of their new patterns!

We would also like to invite anybody to stick around for a short presentation at 2:30 by Umpqua about their production process as well as their signature fly tying program.  If you have any questions, hit the LINK for more info or give us a call at (970) 377-3785.  See you all Saturday!

Were you trying get in some early spring fishing on the Reef or Mile, but are discouraged by the flows?  Don’t be so quick to flush those plans downstream!  Just like the Poudre, the high, dirty water means fish become more comfortable in their surroundings and much more vulnerable to us.

First off, they feed more recklessly as a smorgasbord of annelids, rockworms, stoneflies, craneflies and other juicy invertebrates come bouncing down the river bottom.  In an attempt to get out of the fast flows, fish push to the edges of rivers and into side channels, quite literally to our feet.  You just gotta get up there and see for yourself!

Want some help getting dialed?  Give us a call and book a trip with Kevin or Rex.  Here’s just a taste of what fishing the Reef this time of year has in store for you!

If you didn’t get a chance to make it onto the sign up sheet for the much anticipated Charlie Craven tying demo, don’t fret! Our friends from Umpqua Feather Merchants will be at the south shop for the second half of the day to give a quick presentation on the production of the bomb proof and affordable flies we all fish with on a regular basis. If you are going to the demo, feel free to stick around, but attendance is welcome to anybody! We will have some refreshments and also will be grilling up some food so come on down and hang out with Charlie and the Umpqua crew after Charlie's demo this Saturday, March 11th starting at 12:30!
